All about Sally

Sally Cathcart, PhD, MA, BA (hons)

I am a 'curious' piano teacher.

I also founded the Oxford Piano Group and work for The Voices Foundation

I love teaching the piano, it is my passion but I do like doing things a little differently!

I believe that at the heart of all music making is the development of the ear and my teaching at all levels is founded on this principle.

I specialise in teaching beginners as the early stages of learning require the most skilful and experienced teaching of all.  My Piano Studio also includes intermediate and advanced students, including piano teachers. All lessons are full of laughter and real engagement with the music - whatever its level or style.

As well as teaching the piano to children, teenagers and adults, I continue to learn and experiment with new approaches. I often give lectures and teaching demonstrations to other piano teachers
across the UK. I have been a Principal Tutor on the Piano Teachers' Course (UK) for 17 years.

In 2015 I established The Curious Piano Teachers with my co-founder and Director, Sharon Mark-Teggart. This innovative online space is bringing together piano teachers from across the world and providing them with new ideas and comprehensive teacher training.

2020 saw the publication of my musicianship series Ready to Play. Created and designed with children in mind it is build on sound, pedagogical principles and has making music and learning about music at its heart.
The Oxford Piano Group
I founded the Oxford Piano Group in 2009. Its purpose is provide an environment where amateur pianists can meet every month and share playing experiences, repertoire and ideas. This takes place at the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building at St Hilda's College, Oxford.
The Voices Foundation
I have been a Musicianship Practitioner for The Voices Foundation since 2001. This national, award winning charity provides highly effective training for non-specialist primary school teachers, building their musical confidence and allowing them to deliver a meaningful music curriculum to their classes.
